Welcome To Pusser's
Why PUSSER"S Landings & Company Stores are Unique...
Years ago, I gave into the wanderlust that'd consumed me since I was 10 or 12 years old. I bought a sailboat, and sailed around the world. For almost 6 years, I sailed in both the cold climates of the oceans in the great northern and southern latitudes, and in the warmer, sun-drenched tropical climes between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. While enroute to somewhere else, I stopped in the British Virgin Islands, was instantly overcome by the rum, the beauty of the place and the qualities of their good people. I never left.
Sailing in all kinds of weather and living in different climates as I did, I never found a satisfactory pair of shorts or a good, basic shirt which fit the conditions under which I lived. Although I wasn't a clothing designer (I'm an engineer), I designed myself a pair of sailing shorts and a few shirts which I hoped would be good for the tropical and nautical environment in which I enjoyed living. I had a few extras made, and began wearing my clothes around the islands. People began asking for them, and a clothing business was born. This was 20 years ago.
I'd already started PUSSER'S WEST INDIES to blend and bottle BRITISH NAVY PUSSER'S RUM. For almost 300 years it had been the daily tipple of the jack tars of Great Britain's Royal Navy. No other rum was so akin to the sea and its traditions than PUSSER'S ( a corruption of the word "Purser" in the navy), and no spirit is more tropical than rum. So we married the clothing with the rum which eventually led to our pubs and stores.
Our first products were the PUSSER'S Sailing Shorts and our Skipper's Madras Cotton Shirt. Our first shop was tiny 400 sq. ft. place which we opened on Main Street in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Somehow, we'd managed to also pack a small bar into it which could seat only four. The idea was that our patrons could also sample our PUSSER'S RUM while they were buying our shorts and shirts. As we used to say, "The looser they got, the more they bought!" So there were always plenty of free samples.
Since then, our company's grown up in these lovely islands where the environment is completely tropical and nautical. We know the islands, and we know the climate and the sea which surrounds us, and what clothes and fabrics make people feel good and look good in these environments. I think it's fair to say that our hands-on experience over these past twenty years has made us specialists in the tropical and nautical environments. We're extra careful about the fabrics we use, the fit and the finish as we strive to inject high quality and extra comfort,
along with some real romance into our products for a fair prices. Certainly, romance is a big part of selling today. For us, the romance is easy because our panache is real, and not conjured or contrived. And by the way, if you'd like to receive more information on the British Virgin Islands, please let us know, and we'll see to it that it's sent to you.
Meanwhile, thank you for your interest in our products. We suggest you give them a try. We think you'll be pleased with the positive results. They sell, and there's a REAL story behind all of them and us! Fair winds!
